Nevermore...

“Nevermore…” for solo electric flute was composed in 2022/23 for the flautist, Jenni Halonen as part of her masters research at Piteå Musikhögskolan (Luleå University of Technology). The work takes inspiration from Edgar Allan Poe’s famous poem “The Raven”, drawing on the narrative style of the text to create a dialogue between soloist and the poem’s musical prose. The electroacoustic elements of the work are produced live during performance, the use of an instrument microphone allowing for the amplification and exploitation of the soloist’s voice in combination with the flute’s natural sound. While the musical structure of “Nevermore…” loosely follows the narrative structure of “The Raven”, the main artistic intent of the work is to provide the framework with which the soloist can freely experiment with the sonic capabilities of their instrument in combination with their voice and electroacoustic effects.
